Walk In Those Shoes (WITS) collaborates with writers who live in prison, sharing their experiences and insight through their writing while simultaneously raising awareness, starting conversations and exploring alternatives.
The writing found here and the experiences shared are intended to encourage writers to achieve goals and improve communication skills while sharing with readers a more comprehensive perspective regarding incarceration.
For the LORD hears the cries of the needy; he does not despise his imprisoned people. – Psalm 69:33.

Writing is how I process my life… everything that has happened and is happening. Writing about it gets it out of my head and changes how I relate to it, usually in a positive way.
WITS is the first place that accepted my writing, and when I saw what the first posting of my work looked like I felt like a true writer. It helped me to take my practice more seriously, and I’m grateful for that.
Thanks, WITS, for everything.
– Geoffrey Martin, NC
Purely punitive approaches to incarceration lend themselves to high rates of recidivism as well as poor staff and resident relations. We can all do more to support safer carceral spaces for staff and residents, support reform for a safer society and also work harder to honor victims through change.
WITS’ objective is to explore positive endeavors that support not only residents but also correctional staff, families, and future neighbors.

“I just wanted to thank you for what you do. Your platform gives us a voice and opportunities to display our talents.” – Jon Adams, NC
