We’d love to hear from you.
Views From The Inside is exclusively for the writing of those in prison. Submissions most likely to be posted are thought provoking and make us feel. What is most often rejected is work that is polarizing and confrontational. Our goal is to communicate the issues in a way that lends itself to producing positive change and revealing the limitless potential behind bars. A very good illustration of what we accept and post is in the form of a book, Beneath Our Numbers. Every essay within the book was posted on the site.
We often post writing that helps the reader get a picture of life behind bars, everything from getting laundry done, to loneliness, to relations with staff and cell mates. Submissions that share stories of life prior to incarceration are also considered if they reflect the heart of the person who is incarcerated, or describe how they may have gotten on a path to prison. Comments left directly on posts are appreciated and forwarded to the writers.
Please do not submit previously published material. Submissions are always accepted and cannot be returned. We consider a submission permission to edit and post. Length is flexible, although 1,500 words or less is a typical post. Handwritten submissions are accepted.
Poetry is considered.
In addition to our regular submissions, we often run writing contests that can be found here. If you are submitting your work to a contest, please include ‘Contest Submission’ on your envelope.
